The 8 GREATEST-OF-ALL-TIME CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL IDEAS (during a pandemic)

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

Well, it certainly looks a lot like Christmas, doesn’t it?! And that usually means there are a significant number of men who bought an engagement ring, and now HAVE to come up with a proposal situation. And we all know the pressure that can be.

You can always just put the ring in the bottom of a Christmas stocking and wait till she sees it. But that’s kinda' been done. A lot. If that’s the only thing that comes to mind, you really need to read this.

I love weddings and romance, so I am going to fire off my short, but mighty, list of some ideas for you to consider. Maybe 1 of these suggestions will resonate with you. If not, it may prompt your own creativity to come up with something better! With a little effort you can ratchet up The Event using Christmas, not just as a gift-giving backdrop for your proposal, but as an additional magical time that becomes fused to your proposal for the rest of her life. If you can hire a photographer to photograph the event, it would be even more magical. There is nothing like professional photographs, taken at the exact moment she realizes what is going on.

So, here’s some suggestions to get around the pandemic restrictions and keep the romance flowing:

1. If you live near an historical city, or you have any availability to horses, there is nothing more romantic than snuggling under a cozy blanket listening to the clip-clop of the horses’ hoofs, during a horse & buggy ride. Most buggy owners decorate the buggy for Christmas as well. The perfect time is a sunset ride. Sunsets have the best light for amazing pictures, as well.

2. Christmas lights make a wonderful and glitzy background for pictures. When they are blurred behind you, they can also take on an ethereal quality. Find a beautiful display anywhere. Historical areas are decked out; different communities put on competing light displays; grand hotel lobbies or fancy restaurants have beautiful windows. If you have an outdoor ice-skating rink or a fountain near you, they may be lit up. Most towns have a big Christmas tree somewhere. If nothing seems right in the public area, think about making it an evening of putting up your own tree, stringing some lights outside, and when its time to take it all in with a cup of hot chocolate and some cookies, you can turn an ordinary evening into an extraordinary one. Don’t forget some classic Christmas music in the background.

3.If you live in a snowy area, this one is beautiful. And easy. It will still work in warm climates. Get a couple dozen battery-operated tea light candles (hobby shops sell them in bags of 50 or 100. It’s too late for Amazon), and draw the words “will you marry me” in the snow. Place the candles in the words to light them up. If its in snow, they will glow thru. If you have no snow, you can still spell out the words with the lights and add lots of silk rose petals (you get them in the same place you get the candles).

4. How about a mega movie night? With upgrades: catered food, delivered at the right time; champagne chilling in the back of the fridge; a cozy fleece throw for two to snuggle under, a fire lit (if you have a fire place) and your favorite Christmas movie. If you two don’t have a favorite Christmas movie, then suck it up and pick a chick-flick Christmas romance. Put the ring in the bottom of the popcorn bowl, and go from there.

5. Many grooms pop the question to their bride-to-be while they are away on vacation. The bride doesn’t know it, but the family & friends are in on it. They are there too, hiding out until the big moment. But that can’t happen with Covid 19 hanging around. Gatherings and travel are so restricted. This one might seem a tad mild, but it’s the next best thing to being there all together. Set up a zoom meeting with family and friends, or better yet, get THEM to set the meeting up, so the bride isn’t suspicious. Have everyone on the zoom know what you are planning, so they can all have a cup of cheer waiting to toast you. Pop the question as soon as everyone is on the call. Oh, don’t forget to assign someone to take screenshots. You will not remember! +++++Now that we can travel, I updated this one. Invite your parents and siblings and closest friends to surprise her with an engagement Destination Celebration! The only one who doesn't know the score is your intended; she will be surprised by all the family sitting in the bar waiting for you to make your grand entrance after you pop the question. The surprise is usually overwhelming, so have lots of Kleenex handy!

6. If you have a pet, you’ve got it made this year. Who doesn’t love their animals – especially if they’re in on the secret? Dress your pet (or her’s) in a cute bow or Christmas outfit, and take a selfie of you and the pet pre-proposal (if you hold the ring box in your hand sitting on a tiny piece of treat, your pet will come up close to smell it, quick snap a selfie, and you and your pet will have a special photo to present to her.) When you are ready, have her sit under the tree, supposedly to take her picture and the two of you (your pet and you) can propose together.

7. How about a firepit, s’mores, and laced hot chocolate, proposal? This can be done simply in yours or a friend’s backyard, or at an upscale restaurant or hotel that may have an outdoor area with a firepit near their bar area. You could go to have a drink or an appetizer, and use the social-distance-caused privacy, sitting cozy together in the dark around the fire, to pop the question.

8. Of course, we left the best for last. Have Santa do your asking! You could arrange to go see Santa and have a picture taken, and get down on one knee right there and get Santa’s approval! Or have Santa come to your door. (You can probably find a decent Santa from any fire department – most towns have a parade with Santa – and maybe that Santa would do it for a donation to the fire company.) You could slip Santa a gift box to give your intended, and when they opened it, there was note from Santa asking if he/she will marry you!

So, this year may have curtailed the romance travel business, but it didn’t curtail romance. It didn’t curtail the magic of the season either. So, men, why not use it for all it’s worth?!

I hope some of these ideas prompt your own ideas as well. If you put your heart into it, she'll love it no matter where or when.
